ParticipantEvery semester, thousands of students begin an online degree with enthusiasm. Yet many never finish—not because they lack ability, but because the obstacles they encounter extend far beyond the classroom.
For some, the biggest challenge is time. Balancing a full-time job, family responsibilities, and weekly assignments can quickly become overwhelming. Others struggle with self-discipline, especially when studying independently without the structure of in-person classes.
Financial pressure is another major factor. Even when online programs reduce commuting or housing costs, students still face expenses such as tuition, technology, internet access, textbooks, and software. These costs can make it difficult to stay enrolled through graduation.
Mental well-being also deserves attention. Constant deadlines, isolation, and the pressure to perform can lead to burnout. It’s not uncommon for stressed students to search online for phrases like do my online classes for me when they feel they have run out of options. While that reflects the level of pressure some learners experience, it also highlights the need for stronger academic support, flexible learning options, and accessible student services.
In your opinion, what is the single biggest obstacle to completing an online degree?
-Is it poor time management?
-Financial stress?
-Lack of motivation or accountability?
-Limited interaction with instructors?
-Technology and internet access?
-Balancing work, family, and education? There isn’t one answer that fits everyone. Every student’s journey is different, and understanding these challenges can help educators and institutions create better support systems for online learners.
I’d be interested to hear your experience. What has been the hardest part of completing an online degree, and what strategies have helped you stay on track?
