I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately. Back when I was doing my undergrad, most of my research papers landed somewhere between 10 to 15 pages, and that already felt like a lot. Now that I’m starting my master’s program, I keep hearing different things — some people say the thesis can go up to 100 pages, others say 40–60 is enough. I get that it depends on the subject, but I wish there were clearer expectations. I’d love to hear how long others’ theses were and whether you felt like the page count matched the amount of work you put in.

Yeah, I totally get what you’re saying. When I did my master’s thesis in sociology, mine ended up being about 65 pages including the references and appendix. But I know people in the sciences who were closer to 40, because they had more charts and data. For comparison, my longest undergrad paper was just 18 pages, and even that felt intense back then. If you’re looking for a basic breakdown between different academic levels, I found https://www.customwritings.com/howtowrite/post/how-long-should-research-paper-be/ pretty helpful. It doesn’t give one-size-fits-all answers, but it does explain the typical expectations pretty clearly.

Just dropping in on this thread out of curiosity — I’ve noticed that page counts can really vary by country too. My cousin did her master’s in Germany, and her paper was way shorter than mine was in Canada. It seems like different universities have very different norms, so I guess the best bet is always to double-check the guidelines from your department. Interesting to read everyone’s experiences though!
